Hallowed Ground

By Stephen Sutherland

June 17, 1998 - Nova Scotia

"My connection is that my father John MacLeod Sutherland fought during the Second World War and taught me about the war and the sacrifice. He died in 1974 and I remember him each November 11, which is his birthday, by going to his birthplace where his name is inscribed on the monument as a veteran who has since died."

Rows of crosses
Counting the losses
Look at the price
The enormous sacrifice
So long ago
Men now no one does know
Back then they were just boys
Trying to experience life's joys
Caught up in a war
Knowing the horror
They fought bravely for our country
Lived in total agony and misery
Bullets then were flying all around
Where they fell is hallowed ground
Today let us remember their heroism
They showed true patriotism
Because of them our country is free
May we celebrate these crosses we see
Laying flowers by their side
For here is the place they died.
