Where does the family start?
It starts with a young man falling in love with a girl
— no superior alternative has yet been found.
~Winston Churchill~
Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was one of the greatest English statesmen. He became Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1940 at the age of 66. He was defeated in 1945, but served again from 1951-1955. He resigned as Prime Minister at the age of 81. During his lifetime, Winston Churchill had many accomplishments. He was an author, painter, soldier, speaker, and war reporter.
Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England, on November 30, 1874. He was older than his brother John by six years. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a politician in the Conservative party. His mother, Lady Jennie Jerome Churchill, was an American heiress. Mrs. Churchill was said to be beautiful and charming. Winston Churchill adored his mother, but she had little time for him. Winston Churchill didn't do very well in school. He stuttered and had a lisp. He was a disappointment to his father. Churchill's father often saw him playing with toy soldiers. Because of what his father saw as limited intelligence, he felt Churchill was only suited for a career in the military. When Winston Churchill was twelve, he attended Harrow school, which is a secondary boarding school. Not only did he do very well in his studies at Harrow, but he also discovered that he loved reading literature and writing.
When Winston Churchill finished his academic studies, he entered the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. Churchill graduated eighth in his class, and was appointed a second lieutenant in the Fourth Queen's Own Hussars cavalry.
Because of Churchill's family's influence, he was able to take leave of his military regiment to take a job as a paid reporter, reporting on the war in India to two different newspapers. He was 21 at the time. Later, while in route to South Africa, to report on the Boer War, Churchill was taken prisoner. Upon his escape, he went back home as a national hero. This is when his political career began. He was elected to Parliament. During his career as a politician, Churchill was both a Conservative and a Liberal, depending on what his personal beliefs were. He remained active in Parliament, and was elected as Prime Minister in 1940, at the age of 66. In general, he was well-liked. As a Prime Minister, he was more popular during the war time than he was in times of peace. At his death, his remains laid in state in Westminister Hall for three days, an honor that hadn't been given to an English statesman since 1898.
During Churchill's military career, he served in both the British Navy and the British Army. In between World War I and World War II, he spoke out against the German threat, and was labeled a warmonger. Churchill had a great inner strength. He was a very deep thinker, and he had what was labeled far-sighted wisdom. These characteristics helped him in his service to his country. Churchill served his country from 1895 to 1964. His greatest strength was his will to maintain the power and democracy of Britain.
During World War II, Churchill promised nothing more than "blood, toil, tears and sweat." He worked closely with both President Roosevelt and Josef Stalin and the Soviet Union. Churchill and Roosevelt exchanged more than 1700 messages and met nine times before FDR's death in 1945.
September 12, 1908, Churchill married Clementine Hozier after a six month relationship. They had one boy and four girls. Churchill was a devoted parent. Clementine encouraged Churchill in his life. Churchill said of his marriage that he "lived happily ever afterwards."
Along with finding strength in his marriage and family, Churchill found satisfaction in writing newspaper articles and painting landscapes. He was known as a bulldog. He was John Bull, a symbol of the common people, to the British. Churchill was often seen with a Cuban cigar and two fingers raised in the "V for victory" sign. This was encouraging to the people. He had a great understanding of the English language and wrote histories and biographies. He won the Nobel Prize for literature at the age of 78.
Churchill was rewarded many decorations in his lifetime. He was listed among the greatest Englishmen, and received honorary U.S. citizenship. He died at the age of 90.
My most brilliant achievement was my
ability to persuade my wife to marry me.
