"There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts: what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it"....Dale Carnegie.
I can see that these four statements are true....however, I wonder where the element of "truth" comes in there. I have learned that truth is the absolute building block of anything we say, how we say it, what we do, or how we look. We "present" ourselves ALL the time....and I am learning that truth better be the basis or there is nothing in the long run. So when following these four principles, I think truth is a good thing to remember....
The following is taken from Dale Carnegie's Scrapbook....
"I honestly believe that this is one of the greatest secrets to true peace of mind--a decent sense of values. And I believe we could annihilate fifty percent of all our worries at once if we would develop a sort of private gold standard--a gold standard in terms of what gold is worth to us in terms of our lives"....Dale Carnegie.
You know peace of mind should come from having "a decent sense of values"....however, for me I am finding that I am only fifty percent of any conversation and situation. And so even though I can feel good because I know I have been honest....it doesn't always feel good at the end of a conversation....if the truth I speak has upset someone. For two reasons...."When you love someone it breaks your own heart to hurt them"....and "Even though you speak the truth your friend may hate you, correct the fault, and NEVER speak to you again." Both my own interpretation of quotes that mean a lot to me. I think the "peace of mind" will come when I am "old." For now it seems important to have a good sense of values and a compassionate delivery of them to others. If we are thinking of how we may be evaluated and classified, that is one thing. But for me, remembering this quote by Irwin Federman is important...."People love others not for who they are, but for how they make them feel...."
