The Soldier’s Sacrifice

By Jonathan Laury

As the soldier walked along the road,
An angry man approached to goad,
“You’re the ones who shoot and kill,
You give no thought to the lives you still."
The soldier stopped and simply listened,
And saw the man’s angry eyes glisten,
“You’ll attack a nation that has done no wrong,
You’ll kill thousands as you go along,
You’ll bomb and shoot, and continue to fight,
But now I tell you, you have no right!
How can you stomach the evil you do,
All in the name of the Red, White, and Blue?
You would have innocent blood spilled,
That we may have oil shipments filled.”

Said the soldier as he walked away,
"You sir, are wrong in every way,
It’s not for anything you say,
Rather, it is for you that I fight today.
And if my death means you may live,
Then it is nothing more than I’m glad to give,
I give it freely that you may remain safe in your bed,
And ask for nothing in it's stead.”
